4th (Durham) Survey Regiment RA

17 September 1944: 48 Battery under command CRA 43 Div for advance into Holland. 47 Battery under command CRA 50 Div. 'X' Troop and 4 Pen Recorder Detachment under command CRA Guards Armoured Div. Commanding Officer odered 4 Pen Recorder to deploy to locate mortars shelling main axis. Commanding Officer contacted RA 30 Corps to report progress.

18 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps.  Commanding Officer proceeded forward to contact 47 Battery and forward troop.

19 September 1944: RHQ ordered to be ready to move with 30 Corps colmn. RHQ moved along CLUB route. Convoy proceeded through night with many halts. Route, -VALKENSWAARD - AALST - EINDHOVEN.

20 September 1944: Move continued from EINDHOVEN to area NIJMEGEN. RHQ set up. During move Commanding Officer ent forward toe meet CCRA near NIJMEGEN and received directions possible re arty deployment areas and deployment of FS and SR bases. Commanding Officer contacted OC, 'X' Troop and OC, HQ Troop also OC, US Arty with US Airborne Div.

21 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30  Corps. Commanding Officer left to visit OC, 48 Battery moving with 43 Div. OC 'X'Troop, and to recce possible FS en SR bases. Orders received from CCRA to deploy RS and SR bases as early as possible to cover East flank of 30 Corps. 'S' and 'B' Troops brought forward. 47 Battery ordered to come forward.

22 September 1944: 'S' and 'B' Troops commenced deployment ar first light. Commanding Officer visited CCRA 30 Corps and given details of future ops. Commanding Officer held conference with Capt. TAYLOR and Major BALFOUR. Arranged for Capt. TAYLOR and party to remain with Guards Armd Div. 4-Pen Recorder placed under command Major BALFOUR and to proceed with 43 Div in advance on ARNHEM, together with HQ Survey Troop. Commanding Officer left to visit CRA. Guards Armd Div.  'S' Troop and American Airborne Arty. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps and CBO 30 Corps., Commanding Officer visited all troops in action and RA 30 Corps. 'Y' Troop recce party reached NIJMEGEN.

23 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. 4-Pen Recoder now in action North of NIJMEGEN. CC's of 'S', 'B' and 'X' Troops at RHQ. Commanding Officer visited HQ Troop, 'B' Troop and 'S' Troop. Ordered OC. 'S' Troop to extend base by 2 microphones.

24 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 4-Pen Recorder Section, and 'B' FS Troop. OC, HQ Troop reported all survey carried out for 43 Div and regts in support. Commanding Officer visited CBO 30 Corps and US Arty 82 US Para Div. Commanding Officer visited CCRA to discuss Counter Battery policy and deployment of SR and FS bases. 47 Battery arrived. Orders given for deployment by Commanding Officer.

25 September 1944: 47 Battery took over responsibility for sector South East of NIJMEGEN. 'R' Troop deployed two bases, replacing 'S' Troop. 'A' Troop took over from 'B' Troop. 'S' and 'B' Troops proceeded N of WAAL to deploy bases covering bridgehead over NEDERRIJN. Commanding Officer visited CCRA with CBO. Second-in-command left to visit Major BALFOUR and troops in action. Commanding Officer visited OC, 'X' Troop, 'R' Troop and OC, 47 Battery. Commanding Officer visited OC, 48 Battery, 'S' and 'B' Troops, HQ Troop and 47 Battery.

26 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited 'R' Troop and RA 30 Corps. Commanding Officer 48 Battery and troops deployed North of NIJMEGEN, RHQ moved. Commanding Officer visited 'R', 'A' Troops and RA 30 Corps.

27 September 1944: Unit location statement issued. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 'R' Troop and 47 Battery. Commanding Officer with OC, 47 Battery left on recce for FS OP's area South East of NIJMEGEN. 'X' Troop ordered to concentrate troop and carry survey into future gun areas North West of NIJMEGEN.

28 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. Commanding Officer at CCRA's conference at RHQ 86 Field Regt RA. OC, 47 Battery at RHQ to receive instructions from Commanding Officer. Commanding Officer and OC, 47 Battery visited 'A' and 'R' Troops and FS OP's. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps.

29 September 1944: Commanding Officer visited 'A' and 'R' Troops, 47 BHQ and CBO 30 Corps. Captain FINCH, OC 'R' Troop, left unit to fly to U.K. to collect equipment for Recorders.  Commanding Officer visited RA Corps with CBO 30 Corps. Received instruction to install OP near NIJMEGEN Bridge. Commanding Officer visited 47 Battery and with OC, 47 Battery arranged deployment of this OP.

30 September 1944: RA 30 Corps OP Instruction no 22 received. Casualties through shelling, 1 CR killed, 4 injured. Corps Commander visited 'A' and 'R' Troops in action. Commanding Officer and CBO 30 Corps visited 48 Battery and troops in action. Enemy counter attack expected night 30/1. All Troops warned.

1 October 1944: Commanding Officer and Second-in-command visited RA 30 Corps and 48 Battery in action. Ordered 'S' Troop to deploy new base covering area to North. Commanding Officer visited CBO 30 Corps and RA 30 Corps.

2 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps and 47 Battery. Arranged deployment of new base for 'B' Troop, and calibration of 64 Medium Regt by 'A' Troop. Major JAMIESON of 10 Survey Regt at RHQ. Commanding Officer visited 48 Battery. Arranged for  'S' Troop to deploy two bases, one covering HB area to North, the other to North-East. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps.

3 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited 47 Battery and 'R' Troop. RSM. Boss appointed acting Battery Captain 48 Battery. Lieut. GOODE transferred to HQ Troop vice Lieut. BRAILSFORD (hospital). Commanding Officer with CBO 30 Corps visited 48 Battery and 'S' Troop in action. Commanding Officer visited HQ 5 AGRA to discuss future deployment with CAGRA.

4 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 47 Battery, CBO and troops in action. Commanding Officer at CCRA's conference to hear details of take over by 12 Corps in the island garrison. Commanding Officer discussed take over from 48 Battery with OC 7 Survey Regt RA.

5 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 47 Battery, CBO and 'B' and 'R' Troops. Major JAMIESON, 10 Survey Regt, at RHQ to discuss survey requirements with Commanding Officer.

6 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, CBO, 47 Battery and 'B' Troop 48 Battery ordered to concentrate South of WAAL after handing over complete to 7 Survey Regt RA. Commanding Officer visited 47 Battery.

7 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps., RHQ hit by AP bombs. 1 Officer killed, 4 OR's wounded. OC 10 Survey Regt at RHQ to see Commanding Officer. Commanding Officer visited 'B' and 'A' Troops and 48 Battery concentration area.

8 October 1944: Commanding Officer at CCRA's conference 30 Corps. Future policy and operations outlined. All units to be on theatre grid. S.R. bases deployed to cover NE, E and SE. Short bases to be deployed to operate for fixaton of targets in areas required by CsRA. Commanding Officer held conference with Battery Commanders and Survey Troop Commander. Lieut. VARTY promoted Captain vice HARRIS (revert to Lieut). Captain BLACKBURN appointed Batter'By Captain 47 Battery. Captain VARTY appointed OC 'A' Troop.

9 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps and 47 Battery. Commanding Officer inspected billets of 48 Battery and visited all survey troops. RHQ ordered to vacate area by RA 30 Corps.

10 October 1944: RHQ established in HEUMEN. Commanding Officer at conference at 5 AGRA to discuss counter battery policy, training and leave.

11 October 1944: Major OGDEN on recce for calibration base West of NIJMEGEN. OC's 47 and 48 Batteries at RHQ to see Commanding Officer. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps and RA Guards Armd Div. Commanding Officer visited HQ Troop.

12 October 1944: I.G. RA 30 Corps at RHQ to arrange calibration. Commanding Officer and Second-in-Command visited 48 Battery and 47 Battery re calibration. Commanding Officer visited both F.S. Troops to arrange deployment of short bases. OC's 47 and 48 Batteries at RHQ to see Commanding Officer.

13 October 1944: Commanding Officer proceeded on recce of F.S. Short base with OC 'B' Troop and OC 'X' Troop. Calibration of 55 Field Regt arranged.

14 October 1944: All officers, WO's and Sergeants at lecture by Corps Commander, 30 Corps. Commanding Officer visited 'B' Troop. Commanding Officer at conference with CCRA 30 Corps.

15 October 1944: Commanding Officer held conference of Troop Commanders and Battery Commanders to discus training (small arms) and role of F.S. Short bases. Lt. Col. HUTCHINSON to see Commanding Officer at RHQ to discus equipment. Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps.

16 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps and HQ Troop to inspect possible small arms range. OC 48 Battery at RHQ. OC 7 Survey Regt at RHQ to arrange take over. Commanding Officer at RA 30 Corps in conference with CCRA re take over of bases on island. Commanding Officer gave instructions to Battery Captain 48 Battery re deployment.

17 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. 48 Battery taking over in island sector. 30 Corps OP Instruction, received giving details of take over on island. Commanding Officer visited 'Y', 'A' and 'R' Troops and 47 RHQ.

18 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 43 Div and 'Y' Survey Troop. Commanding Officer visited 48 Battery deployed in action.

19 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. Commanding Officer visited CCRA 30 Corps.

20 October 1944: Conference of B.C's with Commanding Officer at RHQ to discuss bases, training, rest periode, 4 Pen Recorders, and leave. Decided to arrange bases so that wiring parties, OP's, etc. would get definite periods off duty.

21 October 1944: Commanding Officer on recce, with OC HQ Troop and IGRA 30 Corps of FS OP's. Commanding Officer visited all troops in action South of the WAAL.

22 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited troops in action North af WAAL. Commanding Officer visited 10 Survey Regt RA. 2 NCO's and 10 OR's attached form 27 LAA Regt for manning 4 Pen Sections.

23 October 1944: Commanding Officer held conference with OC's 'A' and 'B' Troops re FS Short bases in information role.

24 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. Commanding Officer HQ Troop re new establishment.

25 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited OC 48 Battery and troops in action North of Waal. Calibration of 43 Div arty postponed due to bad visibility. Commanding Officer visited OC 47 Battery.

26 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited 47 Battery. Calibration again postponed due to bad visibility.

27 October 1944: Commanding Officer at RA 30 Corps to discuss future survey requirements. Commanding Officer visited 47 Battery. Calibration postponed due to bad visibility.

28 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 43 Div and Guards Armd Div, HQ Survey Troop and 47 Battery.

29 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 'R', 'Y' and HQ Survey Troops. Commanding Officer on survey recce SE of GRAVE. Calibration of Guards Armoured Div arty carried out.

30 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps, 'Y' Troop, RA 50 Div and 48 Battery. Calibration of 7 Medium Regt carried out.

31 October 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. OC HQ Survey Troop 10 Survey Regt at RHQ to discuss organisation of 4 Pen Troop. Lieut. DIXON RA joined Regt and posted to 4 Pen Section. Commading Officer visited 'R' Troop, 47 Battery HQ and CBO 30 Corps. 4-Pen Recorder section deployed new base on 'island'.

1 November 1944: Commanding Officer visited OC, 48 Battery, 'B' Troop and 'X' Troop.

2 November 1944: Commanding Officer visited CCRA 30 Corps. Commanding Officer visited all troops of 47 Battery in action. Calibration completed of 43 Div arty by Able Troop.

3 November 1944: Commanding Officer visited CBO 30 Corps and 47 BHQ. CBO 30 Corps at RHQ.

4 November 1944: Commanding Officer left RHQ to visit US FO Bn sector North of AACHEN. OC, 47 Battery and 48 Battery at RHQ to discuss organisation of Corps SR Troop.

5 November 1944:  Commanding Officer visited CBO 30 Corps and RA 30 Corps. OC 'B' Troop ordered to deploy 3 post FS base on 'island' to cover area of WAGENINGEN.

6 November 1944: Commanding Officer visited RA 30 Corps. OP order 'CYGNET' received giving instructions for relief of regt by Canadian Survey regt, and deployment in new areas. Conference of Battery Comds, OC HQ Troop and Lieut. QM. at RHQ to receive details of move etc. OC HQ Troop ordered to proceed to new area on 7 November with 1 Survey Section, OC 'S' Troop, one officer from 'R' Troop and assst Adjutant to take over from 12 F.O.B. US Army.

7 November 1944: Recce parties proceeded to new area. Recce party of 2nd Canadian Survey Regt arrived and began take over from RHQ and 48 Battery.

8 November 1944: RHQ moved to ASCH, arriving at 1715 hrs. 48 Battery completed handover to 2nd Canadian Survey Regt RCA. Commanding Officer proceeded to new area near AMSTENRADE, contacted 12 F.O.B. and proceeded on recce of bases and gun areas.

9 November 1944: RHQ and 48 Battery arrived at AMSTENRADE and commenced take over. 'S' Troop deployed new base and 'B' Troop took over existing long base from 12 F.O.B. and recced positions for short bases Commanding Officer at CCRA's coordinating conference at RA 30 Corps. Received gun areas from Guards Armd Div and CAGRA.

10 November 1944: 47 Battery arrived from NIJMEGEN and proceeded to take over from 'B' Battery of 12 F.O.B.
