652 Air Observation Squadron:

Formed at Old Sarum on 1st May 1942, the aircraft being Tiger Moths, by the end of the year the Squadron was re-equipped with Auster Mark I aircraft, and later with the Mark II.

The Squadron carried out deck landing trails with the Royal Navy, when stationed in Scotland. They went into action for the first time in Normandy in 1944, the first sorties being flown on the morning of D+2. From its formation until the end of the war this Squadron had but one Commanding Officer, Major R.R.Coley.
