The Section Commander

 

Section Commanders will be detailed by the G.P.O from the Troop leader, the troop B.S.M and the N.C.O's of the troop.

If olny one section commander is detailed, he will preform the same duties but for both sections.

 

The duties of the section commander are:-

(a) Assisting the G.P.O as required.

(b) On coming into action, ascertaining the zero line from the G.P.O. and checking that the guns are parallel and in the required time.

(c) Supervising the service of the guns in his section.

(d) Supervising the care and maintenance of the equipment of his section, including the testing and adjustment of sights.

(e) Acknowledging all orders and assisting in the passage of orders where necessary.

(f) Controlling his huns in action. This control is better exercised by watching and listening than by personal inspection of the sights. Except when induvidual corrections have been ordered during a shoot, he will ensure that his guns are parallel at all times both as regards line and elevation, and that they are parallel to the guns of the neighbouring section.

 

To correct an error during a shoot, the section commander carries out the checks described in para 23 and 24 in the sequence there detailed.

 

To correct a line error, the section commander ensures:-

(a) That the slipping scale is set at the correct switch.

(b) On coming into action, ascertaining the zero line from the G.P.O. and checking that the guns are parallel and in the required line.

(c) Supervising the service of the guns in his section.

(d) Supervising the care and maintenance of the equipment of his section, including the testing and adjustment of sights.

(e) Acknowledging all orders and assisting in the passage of orders where necessary.

(f) Controlling his guns in action. This control is better exercised by watching and listening than by personal inspection of the sights.

To correct a line error, the section commander ensures:-

(a) That the slipping scale is set at the correct switch.

(b) That the layer is using the correct aiming point.

(c) That the dail sight is correctly stamped in its socket.

(d) That the sero degree reading of the slipping scale is still below the main scale as recored on the record plate.

 

To correct an elevation error, the section commander ensures:-

(a) That the range reader is set at the correct charge.

(b) That the range scale plate is set at the correct elevation.

(c) That the sight clinometer is set at the correct angle of sight and is correctly clamped in its bracket.

 

If the above steps fail to disclose the source of error, an error in adjustment of sights is indicated.
